Hair Modelling – Backstage Advice & Tips by SoHoBabi
Hiya beautiful people.Â
Â
This is a follow on from my recent post regarding hair modelling.  Thank you for your questions in my previous post and I hope I shed some light for you on hair modelling from the models (my) perspective.Â
Â
In this post I will touch on the backstage experience from hair shows to shoots. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. It is my aim to shed light on hair modelling and I always believe the truth is a beautiful thing, so please don’t think that my honesty is not a happy experience, and please feel free to ask any questions.
Â
My greatest advice to young hair stylists entering hair competitions, is to study the latest fashions within the industry and to not copy them, but pay close attention to what is going on and to what is “in fashion”, as this will ensure you catch the eye of the judges.Â
Â
Secondly, I would prep your model and chose one that can sell your look for you and your salon, this is key for the model to know that it is not necessarily egotistic but more a sales role with a touch of glamour.
Â
Hair shows can be time consuming for the hair model, I spent days at a time in the salon to prep different looks, and while you aren’t on your feet all day, it can be pretty tiring reading magazines and sipping coffee all day…its a hard life indeed! So be prepared to have 8 hour days indoors with your head being the focal point.Â
Â
Also, be prepared to walk a catwalk, even though hair modelling is about the hair, should you make the finals of a competition you will be expected to walk a catwalk with plenty of lights shining in your face. This can be gruelling but remember it is the hair style that is being judged, not you as such. You are a star regardless.
Â
And last but not least, make sure you are always advised when a photo will be going to print in a magazine or newspaper and ensure it is something you want done. Some salons wont tell you and therefore they receive business from your face while you are yet to know it is out in the community. Its just nice to have a clear path of communication for both parties involved.
Â
So there’s some more pointers about the hair modelling industry…remember to ask questions if you’re not sure what the stylist is talking about and please feel free to email me.Â
