I’m sure it started with my first report card and was written on every one till I left High School, “Dean talks too much”. So who would have thought I could make a career out of it?

Being able to talk (read: communicate) is an essential facet of hairdressing, but more importantly is the ability to listen. A good Hairdresser needs to be willing to listen for as long as it takes the client to tell them what they would like done with their hair. But on the flip side, a client should not be afraid to ask for what they want, or be made to feel they can’t ask for it.

I have a new client, she’s a singer and we are doing a photo shoot in a couple of weeks for her portfolio. It’s exciting work and I’m hoping to be able to con her into writing about the experience from her point of view so you can all read it. But my point? She feels relaxed enough to spend time talking to me about what we are going to do before, during and after the shoot.

She’s decided on a different colour than what was originally planned, so she told me. She’s decided that she doesn’t want to use hair extensions to add thickness like originally planned, so she told me. Getting my point?

Yes I love to talk, just ask any of my long suffering friends, but what I really love, is when my clients talk to me so that I can give them exactly what they want.

A good Hairdresser is hard to find, but shouldn’t be hard of hearing.
